CISI Economics and Markets for Wealth Management
Explore syllabus-aligned study tools, realistic practice and course-grounded AI support.
The CISI Certificate in International Advanced Wealth Management (IAWM) combines two different skills: understanding investments and applying that knowledge to clients. Its two Level 4 papers are Economics and Markets for Wealth Management (EMWM) and Wealth Management Practice (WMP). Both use multiple-choice assessment, but preparing for them as though they were interchangeable leaves important gaps.
This guide explains the route, the current syllabus windows and a practical way to connect market knowledge with portfolio decisions. The official CISI qualification factsheet confirms that the certificate requires both units.
Understand the two-paper route
Economics and Markets is Paper 1. It develops the foundations needed to interpret economic conditions, compare investment characteristics and understand how markets operate. Wealth Management Practice is Paper 2. It brings analysis, products, risk and client information together in the advice and portfolio-management process.
| Planning point | Economics and Markets | Wealth Management Practice |
|---|---|---|
| Role | Paper 1: investment and market foundations | Paper 2: client and portfolio application |
| Current syllabus | Version 4 | Version 3 |
| Exam window | 21 December 2025–20 December 2027 | 2 March 2026–20 August 2027 |
| Standard assessment | 80 multiple-choice questions | 80 multiple-choice questions |
| Standard time | 120 minutes | 120 minutes |
| Syllabus elements | Eight | Eight |
The windows above follow the CISI workbook editions chart, dated 13 October 2026 and checked on 18 October. Match the internal edition and syllabus version to your sitting. A legacy filename containing an older edition number is not reliable evidence of the PDF’s contents.
Computer-based tests may include up to 10% additional unscored trial questions, with proportionate extra time. Plan practice around the standard format, then follow the instructions shown for your actual appointment.
Map Paper 1 before choosing revision priorities
The official Version 4 syllabus gives these nominal allocations:
| Economics and Markets element | Questions |
|---|---|
| Wealth Management and the Financial Services Sector | 8 |
| Macro-Economic Environment | 9 |
| Cash, Money Markets and the Foreign Exchange Market | 8 |
| Fixed-Income Securities | 16 |
| Equities | 12 |
| Real Estate and Alternative Investments | 13 |
| Derivatives | 8 |
| Settlement and Safe Custody | 6 |
| Total | 80 |
Fixed income is the largest individual allocation. Give it sufficient practice, particularly where a question requires calculation followed by interpretation. However, a weighting is a planning aid rather than permission to omit smaller elements. CISI allows limited variation in the allocation between examinations.
For each investment topic, build a short comparison: how the instrument works, where its return comes from, what can go wrong and what changes its value. Then practise explaining the result of a calculation in words. A numerical answer without an understanding of the investment effect is fragile knowledge.

Move from analysis to decisions in Paper 2
The current Wealth Management Practice workbook contains the Version 3 examination specification:
| Wealth Management Practice element | Questions |
|---|---|
| Securities Analysis | 13 |
| Taxation, Trusts and Foundations | 10 |
| Investment Products | 9 |
| Principles of Investment Risk and Return | 10 |
| Portfolio Construction | 10 |
| Investment Advice | 7 |
| Investment Selection and Recommendation | 13 |
| Portfolio Evaluation, Maintenance and Review | 8 |
| Total | 80 |
The two largest elements each carry 13 questions, but the advice process connects the whole paper. When reviewing a scenario, identify the client’s objective and constraints before comparing investments. Explain why the chosen action fits those circumstances and why another plausible action does not.
A useful revision worksheet has four columns: client facts, relevant investment characteristics, decision and review trigger. This encourages you to connect analysis to a recommendation instead of learning product descriptions in isolation. Keep tax and legal assumptions tied to the jurisdiction and source being studied; an example from one country is not a universal rule.

Build a study cycle that tests understanding
Start with a short diagnostic for each paper. Mark uncertain correct answers as well as wrong answers. Separate gaps in knowledge from calculation errors, misread requirements and weak application to a client’s circumstances.
Then use a repeating cycle:
- Learn one objective. Read the relevant source explanation and identify what the syllabus verb asks you to do: recall, calculate, interpret or evaluate.
- Retrieve it without notes. Explain a distinction or reproduce a calculation method before checking the answer.
- Apply it to a changed scenario. Alter the client constraint, investment feature or numerical assumption and consider how the answer changes.
- Review the error. Record the reason for the mistake and the action needed to prevent it recurring.
Studying Paper 1 first is a practical option when market foundations are your weaker area. An experienced investment analyst may need relatively more work on Paper 2’s client process. Use diagnostic evidence to allocate time rather than assuming equal effort is necessary everywhere.
Use timed practice without confusing familiarity with readiness
The standard 120-minute, 80-question format gives an average of 90 seconds per question. For a practice session, aim to finish the first pass with time to revisit flagged items. Do not allow one difficult calculation to consume the time needed for several other questions.
After a mock, explain your reasoning before reading the solution. Track first-attempt performance separately from repeat attempts, because recognising a familiar answer can inflate a score. Use mixed review for retention and reserve unfamiliar questions for a stronger readiness check.
Compare your work with the official sample and instructions for the specific paper. Avoid transferring a result boundary or booking rule from another CISI qualification merely because its question count is similar.
Check the source version before your sitting
Keep a short source checklist: your booked paper, examination date, workbook edition, syllabus version and any applicable CISI Candidate Updates. Recheck it when rescheduling across an edition boundary.
The two courses have separate preparation pages: Economics and Markets for Wealth Management and Wealth Management Practice. Use their previews to assess the teaching approach, then organise your revision around the official objectives for each paper. Completing both units is the certificate route; buying or finishing a preparation course is not the award of the CISI qualification.
Frequently Asked Questions
1 Which exams make up the CISI International Advanced Wealth Management certificate?
The Level 4 certificate requires Economics and Markets for Wealth Management, Paper 1, and Wealth Management Practice, Paper 2. Passing one unit does not complete the certificate.
2 What is the IAWM exam format?
Each paper has 80 multiple-choice questions and a standard duration of 120 minutes. Computer-based tests may include additional unscored trial questions with proportionate additional time.
3 Which syllabus versions should I use?
The CISI chart checked on 18 October 2026 lists Economics and Markets Version 4 for exams from 21 December 2025 to 20 December 2027, and Wealth Management Practice Version 3 from 2 March 2026 to 20 August 2027. Check the current chart and Candidate Updates for your sitting.
4 How do the two IAWM papers differ?
Paper 1 develops knowledge of the economy, markets, asset classes and custody. Paper 2 applies investment analysis to client circumstances, portfolio construction, recommendations and ongoing review.
5 Should I study Economics and Markets before Wealth Management Practice?
That is a useful study sequence if you need stronger asset-class foundations, because those concepts support later portfolio decisions. It is a preparation recommendation, not a claim that CISI requires this booking order.
