CySEC Basic
Explore syllabus-aligned study tools, realistic practice and course-grounded AI support.
The CySEC Basic exam is called “Basic”, but it still tests a broad working knowledge of Cyprus investment-services regulation. Candidates must connect authorisation, governance, client protection, market rules, collective investment and AML duties to the correct entity, authority and trigger. Passive reading is rarely enough when several answer options use familiar regulatory language.
Quick answer: the current CySEC Basic Examination contains 50 multiple-choice questions, allows 60 minutes and requires at least 70% to pass. The official syllabus has eight elements with unequal question allocations.
CySEC Basic exam format and current facts
| Exam feature | Current specification |
|---|---|
| Assessment | Computer-based multiple choice |
| Questions | 50 |
| Duration | 60 minutes |
| Pass mark | 70% |
| Syllabus elements | 8 |
| Official fee when verified | EUR200 |
The average pace is 72 seconds per question. That is workable when you can identify the rule quickly, but slow reconstruction can consume the time needed for later questions. Timed practice should therefore be part of preparation, not something saved for the final day.

How the eight-element syllabus is weighted
The official CySEC Basic syllabus publishes a standard question allocation. The allocations total 50 and give a practical basis for deciding where revision time should go.
| Element | Standard questions |
|---|---|
| Investment Services Law: scope, powers and offences | 4 |
| Cypriot Investment Firms | 12 |
| Cypriot Investment Firms and Banks | 8 |
| Markets in Financial Instruments Regulation | 5 |
| Insider Dealing and Market Manipulation Regulation | 8 |
| Open-Ended Undertakings for Collective Investment | 5 |
| Alternative Investments | 6 |
| Prevention of Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing | 2 |
The largest three elements account for 28 of 50 questions: Cypriot Investment Firms, Cypriot Investment Firms and Banks, and Market Abuse. They deserve a substantial share of your study plan. However, the two AML questions are not disposable. A focused review of risk-based controls, customer due diligence and governance can protect marks efficiently.
Why CySEC Basic questions can be difficult
The difficulty usually comes from boundaries rather than obscure vocabulary. A statement may be correct in general but wrong for the entity or stage named in the question. Typical pressure points include:
- distinguishing a CIF authorisation condition from a continuing organisational obligation;
- separating suitability from appropriateness;
- identifying when conflict disclosure is a last resort rather than the first control;
- keeping trading-venue, investment-firm and systematic-internaliser duties separate under MiFIR;
- distinguishing possession, use, disclosure and publication of inside information;
- attaching a UCITS or AIF rule to the fund, management company, depositary or AIFM; and
- remembering a numerical threshold together with its unit and trigger.
For each rule, ask: Who is responsible? What activates the duty? What must happen next? Which exception could alter the result? That four-part check helps eliminate close distractors more reliably than keyword matching.

What this element tests
This element establishes the legal perimeter, CySEC's supervisory powers, Investor Compensation Fund protection and offence exposure. Keep scope, supervision, compensation and sanctions separate when a question moves between them. The standard official specification allocates 4 questions to this element in a 50-question paper.

A practical CySEC Basic study plan
1. Turn the syllabus into a tracker
Create one row for every official learning outcome. Record the relevant source section, your confidence and the last date you retrieved it without notes. This prevents comfortable topics from taking all the available time while a small element remains untouched.
2. Study connected topics together
Use three linked blocks:
- Legal perimeter and firm operation: Elements 1-3.
- Markets and conduct: Elements 4-5.
- Funds and financial crime: Elements 6-8.
The blocks make comparison easier, but continue recording performance against the eight official elements. “Markets and conduct” is a study connection, not a replacement syllabus category.
3. Use active recall for exact rules
Flashcards are most useful for authorities, client classifications, disclosure triggers, time periods, percentages and fund structures. When a card contains a number, answer with its unit and context. For example, “85%” is not a complete answer unless you can explain that a feeder UCITS invests at least that portion of its assets in one master UCITS.
4. Practise discrimination with short scenarios
After learning a rule, change one decisive fact: the client category, regulated entity, instrument, venue or stage of the process. Decide whether the result changes and explain why. This trains the judgement needed when several options appear plausible.
5. Move from Study Mode to timed papers
Use Study Mode first for immediate marking and explanations. Once individual elements are stable, complete a full 50-question paper in 60 minutes with answers hidden until submission. The CySEC Basic preparation course includes five weighted full-length mocks, eight summaries, 104 flashcards, a 100-item quick reference and a source-grounded AI tutor.
How to review a CySEC Basic mock
The overall percentage tells you whether you crossed the pass threshold; it does not tell you what to study next. Review each attempt in three layers:
- Incorrect answers: identify the missing rule or mistaken distinction.
- Uncertain correct answers: treat guesses as weaknesses even when they scored.
- Element performance: compare accuracy with the official weighting.
Label the reason for each error. Useful categories include wrong actor, wrong authority, missed qualifier, numerical confusion, exception overlooked and sequence reversed. Retest the concept after a delay rather than repeating the same wording immediately.
When scores improve, alternate targeted repair with complete mixed papers. A high score achieved by repeatedly drilling one chapter is less useful than a stable score across the eight-element distribution.
Final readiness checklist
Before sitting the examination, confirm that you can:
- explain the scope of all eight elements without looking at the syllabus;
- recall the standard question distribution and prioritise revision accordingly;
- separate firm, CySEC, venue, fund, manager and depositary duties;
- distinguish suitability, appropriateness and best execution;
- state important percentages, thresholds and deadlines with their exact context;
- complete 50 mixed questions within 60 minutes without rushing the final section;
- review mistakes by element and reason rather than only by total score; and
- verify current registration information on the official CySEC page.
A reliable preparation process combines structured coverage, precise recall and timed application. The syllabus controls the scope, the source material builds understanding, and weighted mock exams show whether that knowledge holds under official time pressure.
