What the Published Hours Mean
CISI pages may publish total qualification time, while a syllabus or local exam page may publish a workbook study estimate. Total qualification time includes formal study, self-study and assessment activity. A workbook estimate is narrower. Label the measure before comparing qualifications.
Your plan should start with the current official figure for the exact unit, then be adjusted using prior knowledge, diagnostic accuracy and the number of weeks available.
1. International Introduction to Securities & Investment (IISI)
Published estimate: approximately 80 hours
The IISI covers 50 questions across ten syllabus elements. The current material estimates about 80 hours. Use a diagnostic to redistribute those hours, but do not remove an element from the plan because its terminology feels familiar.
2. International Certificate in Wealth & Investment Management (ICWIM)
Published total qualification time: 154 hours
The ICWIM is a Level 3 qualification. CISI publishes 154 total qualification hours. The Saudi Financial Academy’s CME-4A page gives a separate workbook estimate of about 100 hours, so a CME-4A candidate should use the local page while a global ICWIM comparison should use the CISI qualification measure.
The ICWIM exam guide explains the eight-element allocation. Use scenario and calculation practice after the relevant learning objectives have been covered.
3. Global Financial Compliance (GFC)
Published total qualification time: 102 hours for the award; 183 hours for the certificate
The GFC standalone Level 3 Award has 102 total qualification hours. CISI publishes 183 hours for the Level 3 Certificate when GFC is combined with a regulatory paper. Confirm which credential you are pursuing before placing either number in the schedule.
4. UAE Financial Rules & Regulations (FRR)
Published workbook estimate: approximately 100 hours
UAE FRR is the local regulatory examination used in specified federal UAE CMA pathways. The current workbook estimates approximately 100 hours and covers the federal capital-market framework, licensed bodies, funds, markets, AML/CFT, client protection, trading and DFM rules. It is not a DFSA syllabus.
Use flashcards for source-linked thresholds and deadlines, but also practise scenarios that distinguish the authority, participant and obligation involved.
5. Fundamentals of Financial Services (FFS)
Published total qualification time: 101 hours
The FFS is a Level 2 Award for people new to financial services. CISI publishes 101 total qualification hours. Prior experience may change how those hours are allocated, but it does not justify replacing the official figure with an unsupported 20-hour estimate.
Quick Comparison Table
| Module | Published measure | Published hours | Planning note |
|---|---|---|---|
| FFS | Total qualification time | 101 | Level 2 Award |
| IISI | Study estimate | About 80 | Check the current syllabus language and version |
| UAE FRR | Workbook study estimate | About 100 | Federal UAE regulatory paper, not DFSA |
| GFC | Total qualification time | 102 award; 183 certificate | The certificate adds a regulatory paper |
| ICWIM | Total qualification time | 154 | CME-4A separately lists about 100 workbook hours |
Check the Version Before Scheduling the Hours
Record the syllabus version, effective examination dates and workbook edition for the sitting. Then check the CISI Candidate Update for that unit. A new edition can change the pages or facts that require study even when the published workload remains the same.

Convert Published Hours into a Weekly Plan
Divide the published hours by the available weeks, then reserve part of the weekly total for recall and timed practice.
- IISI: 80 hours over eight weeks equals 10 hours per week.
- ICWIM: 154 total qualification hours over twelve weeks equals about 12 hours 50 minutes per week.
- GFC Award: 102 hours over ten weeks equals about 10 hours 12 minutes per week.
Start with syllabus coverage and a diagnostic. Use closed-book recall after each topic and full timed mocks only after the complete syllabus has been studied. Review each error against the current workbook and record the learning objective that needs another session.
CISI Study Hours Quick Reference
Use the official workload and current syllabus to build the calendar for IISI, ICWIM or GFC, then use our professional-exam study techniques to decide how each weekly block will be used.
Study hours do not predict a promotion or salary outcome. If career return is part of the decision, compare the role, location and experience assumptions in the Dubai finance career guide separately from the qualification workload.

Financial Markets Overview
The financial services sector links organizations seeking capital with those with capital available to invest. The wholesale/professional sector includes Equity markets (trading shares on regulated exchanges with indices like S&P 500, FTSE 100), Bond markets (debt instruments for raising capital, influenced by interest rates and credit risk), Foreign Exchange (decentralized OTC trading of currencies for trade, speculation, and hedging), Derivatives (trading options, swaps, futures based on underlying assets like interest rates, mostly OTC but moving to exchanges), Insurance (management of personal/corporate risk, dominated by entities like Lloyd's and large reinsurers like Munich Re), Commercial Lending (business loans, term loans, unsecured loans, lines of…
