SCI ComGI - Commercial General Insurance
Explore source-grounded summaries, flashcards, reference tools and realistic mock practice.
The SCI ComGI exam contains 50 multiple-choice questions, lasts 75 minutes and requires 70% to pass. You need at least 35 correct answers. That gives an average of 90 seconds per question, but the real task is choosing the policy that protects the stated interest and then applying its trigger, exclusions, conditions and payment basis in the correct order.
The Singapore College of Insurance administers Commercial General Insurance as the specialist module paired with BCP for the Commercial General Insurance Certification. Use the official SCI Certification in General Insurance page for current schedules, fees, registration and candidate instructions.
SCI ComGI Exam Format
- Questions: 50 multiple-choice questions

- CPD: 1.25 CPD hours upon passing, according to SCI’s current programme page
- Recommended study time: 40 to 50 hours for each CGI certification module
Answer every question because there is no negative marking. Complete direct product and document questions first, then return to long scenarios involving business interruption calculations, liability triggers, specialist exclusions or competing settlement rules.
The SCI ComGI Topics
The source has nine numbered chapters, with the large liability chapter divided into Parts I and II. For revision, it is clearer to treat the material as ten study sections.
| Study section | Main focus |
|---|---|
| Property Insurance | Fire, theft, electronic equipment, glass, commercial and industrial special risks, property terrorism |
| Business Interruption | Damage trigger, indemnity period, gross profit, increased costs, extensions and claims |
| Liability Part I | Work-injury compensation, public liability and products liability |
| Liability Part II | Professional, management, carrier, specialist and event-contingency liability |
| Commercial Motor | Cover levels, documents, underwriting, claims, fleets and motor trade |
| Marine and Aviation | Cargo, hull, builders’ risks, marine liabilities, energy and aviation risks |
| Construction, Machinery and Bonds | Contract works, erection, plant, breakdown, consequential loss and guarantees |
| Pecuniary | Fidelity, crime, money, commercial credit and political risks |
| Foreign Worker | Medical protection, security guarantees, administration and claims |
| Group Accident and Corporate Travel | Accident benefits, disability, travel assistance and claims |
SCI does not publish topic-by-topic question weights on its current public programme page. Do not skip a section because it looks shorter than property, liability or marine insurance.
Use One Cover-Analysis Method
Every ComGI scenario becomes easier when you apply the same sequence:
- Interest: what is being protected—property, business income, legal liability, money, credit, a contractual obligation or a person’s accident benefit?
- Trigger: what event activates the insuring clause?
- Timing and territory: did the event occur within the relevant policy period, transit, project, trip or claims-reporting condition?
- Definitions: does the person, property, activity, product, voyage or event meet the wording?
- Exclusions and conditions: does the policy remove or restrict the claim?
- Payment basis: apply the sum insured, limit, sublimit, average condition, excess, benefit schedule or bond amount.
Do not begin with an exclusion. First establish that the insuring clause applies. Do not begin with a sum insured either: a large sum cannot turn an uninsured event into a covered loss.

Which ComGI concept is best described by this statement? Protects insured business results after interruption caused by insured damage, rather than paying for the physical damage itself.
Separate Property Damage from Business Interruption
Property insurance pays for covered physical loss or damage to the insured asset. Business-interruption insurance measures the financial result of the interruption caused by insured damage. These are linked but different decisions.
For a business-interruption question, identify:
- the insured damage that starts the claim;
- the indemnity period during which business results are affected;
- the reduction in turnover or revenue;
- the applicable rate of gross profit;
- reasonable increased cost of working;
- savings in expenses; and
- trend adjustments that represent what the business would have achieved without the damage.
An excess can be monetary or time-based. A time excess excludes the initial period of interruption; it is not automatically converted into a cash deduction. An extension for customers, suppliers, utilities or denial of access has its own trigger and limits. It does not remove the need to prove the conditions of that extension.
Distinguish Liability Triggers
Liability insurance begins with legal responsibility. Injury, damage or financial loss alone does not prove the insured is liable.
Occurrence-based wording focuses on when the injury or damage happened. Claims-made wording focuses on when a claim was first made and notified, subject to retroactive dates and circumstance-reporting rules. Public and products liability commonly centre on bodily injury or property damage. Professional indemnity centres on covered professional error. Directors and officers cover centres on management wrongful acts. Carriers and bailees cover property entrusted to the insured.
Keep the insured’s own loss separate from third-party liability. Replacing the insured’s defective product is different from paying damages for injury caused by that product. Repairing the insured’s machinery is different from liability for damage to a customer’s property. In every liability question, confirm the claimant, legal duty, breach, causation, damage and policy section.
Map Specialist Products to Their Interests
Marine, engineering and pecuniary questions often use familiar words in unfamiliar settings. Build a one-line interest map:
- Cargo: goods during the insured transit.
- Hull: the vessel or aircraft itself.
- Builders’ risks: a vessel during construction and trials.
- Contract works: the construction project and temporary works.
- Erection risks: machinery during installation and testing.
- Machinery breakdown: sudden insured physical damage to machinery.
- Machinery consequential loss: business results after insured machinery damage.
- Fidelity: direct financial loss caused by employee dishonesty.
- Money: defined money in transit or at insured premises.
- Credit: trade-receivable loss caused by covered buyer default.
- Political risks: defined government or political action affecting assets, contracts or payment.
For insurance bonds, identify the principal, beneficiary and guarantor. A bond secures an obligation. It is not the same as an ordinary indemnity policy because the guarantor can have recourse against the principal under the indemnity arrangement.
A Direct SCI ComGI Study Plan
Stage 1 — Build the product map. Write the insured interest and trigger for every product. If two products appear close, write one sentence explaining what each protects that the other does not.
Stage 2 — Drill documents and underwriting. Link every requested fact to the hazard it helps the insurer assess. Construction, occupancy and protections influence property. Turnover and dependency influence interruption. Activities and contracts influence liability. Vehicle use, voyage, project, machinery condition, employee controls and debtor quality play the same role in their sections.
Stage 3 — Practise claim sequences. Start with notification and the insuring clause, preserve evidence, apply exclusions and conditions, measure payment and preserve recovery rights. Match accounts, surveys, medical reports, carriage records and legal correspondence to the fact they prove.
Stage 4 — Complete timed 50-question mocks. Use the full 75 minutes and answer every item. Review errors under interest, trigger, timing, exclusion, condition, evidence or settlement basis. Re-answer a fresh question on the same distinction before moving on.
The SCI ComGI exam preparation course combines ten study-section summaries, 214 flashcards, a 210-item searchable reference sheet, five timed mocks and a course-grounded study assistant in one learning hub.
ComGI Exam-Day Checklist
Identify the insurance class before reading all four choices. Mark the insured interest, actor, trigger and timing word. For liability, establish legal responsibility first. For property and interruption, separate physical damage from the business result. For specialist policies, ask what asset, obligation or financial interest the product exists to protect. Answer all 50 questions and use the final minutes to revisit only genuine close calls.
