SCI BCP – Basic Insurance Concepts and Principles
Explore source-grounded summaries, flashcards, reference tools and realistic mock practice.
The SCI BCP exam contains 40 multiple-choice questions, lasts 45 minutes and requires 70% to pass. You need at least 28 correct answers. With an average of 67.5 seconds per question, the main challenge is not long calculation: it is identifying the exact market role, legal principle, document or claims rule without confusing it with a nearby concept.
The Singapore College of Insurance administers BCP as the common foundation module for its personal and commercial general-insurance certification pathways. Use the official SCI Certification in General Insurance page for current schedules, fees, registration and candidate instructions.
SCI BCP Exam Format
- Questions: 40 multiple-choice questions
- Duration: 45 minutes
- Passing grade: 70%, equivalent to 28 correct answers
- Scoring: one mark for a correct answer; no mark or deduction for a wrong or blank answer
- Delivery: English-medium, closed-book computer-screen examination
- Result: result slip; SCI states that no official certificate is issued
- CPD: 0.75 CPD hours upon passing, according to SCI’s current exam information
- Recommended study time: 40 to 50 hours for each certification module
Answer every question because there is no negative marking. In practice, use two passes: complete clear definitions and direct distinctions first, then return to longer causation, indemnity, contribution and claims scenarios.
The Nine SCI BCP Chapters
| Chapter group | Main focus |
|---|---|
| 1–2 | Insurance and reinsurance market participants, distribution, MAS regulation, risk-based capital, nomination, policy-owner protection and premium-payment rules |
| 3–4 | Risk types, insurability, perils, hazards, risk treatment, insurable interest, utmost good faith, indemnity, subrogation, contribution and proximate cause |
| 5–7 | Contract and agency law, insurance documents, notification, evidence, settlement, fraud, recovery rights and claim disputes |
| 8–9 | Reinsurance, co-insurance, ethics, professionalism, industry codes, data protection and cyber hygiene |
SCI does not publish chapter-by-chapter marks on the public page. Revise every chapter. Give extra application practice to Chapter 4 principles and Chapters 6–7 documents and claims because many questions can combine more than one rule.
Start with the Correct Insurance Relationship
Before applying a rule, identify who is acting and for whom.
- An insurer accepts the original insurance risk.
- A reinsurer accepts risk transferred by an insurer.
- An agent acts within authority granted by a principal, commonly an insurer.
- An insurance broker generally acts for the client in arranging cover.
- A loss adjuster investigates the cause, circumstances and amount of a claim for the appointing insurer.
This prevents a common error: assigning the insurer’s contractual responsibility to an intermediary. The same discipline applies to reinsurance. The original insured has direct relationships with co-insurers that share the original risk, but ordinarily has no direct insurance contract with the reinsurer behind one insurer.

Learn the Six Core Insurance Principles as a Sequence
Do not memorise the principles as isolated definitions. Use them in the order a policy and claim may require them.
- Insurable interest: does the person have the legal relationship required to insure the subject matter?
- Utmost good faith: were material facts disclosed without material misrepresentation?
- Indemnity: what financial amount restores the insured’s position without producing a profit?
- Subrogation: after indemnification, can the insurer exercise the insured’s recovery rights against a responsible third party?
- Contribution: are two or more liable indemnity policies covering the same interest, subject matter and peril?
- Proximate cause: what was the dominant and effective cause of the loss?
Two distinctions matter repeatedly. Subrogation concerns recovery from a third party; contribution concerns sharing between insurers. Proximate cause is not automatically the event closest in time to the damage. It is the dominant cause in the chain of events.
For indemnity questions, apply the policy basis before calculating payment. A sum insured or limit caps an admissible loss. An excess leaves the stated share with the insured. An average clause proportionately reduces a property claim when the property is underinsured. These are different mechanisms and should not be treated as interchangeable deductions.
Match Every Insurance Document to Its Function
BCP document questions become easier when you separate application, evidence, contract wording and claims evidence.
- The proposal form supplies material information for underwriting.
- A cover note provides temporary evidence while final documentation is prepared.
- A certificate of insurance evidences that specified insurance is in force.
- The policy document contains the general wording, conditions and exclusions.
- The schedule identifies the insured, period, subject matter, sums insured and other particulars.
- An endorsement changes the base wording and must be read with the policy and schedule.
- A renewal notice invites continuation on stated terms; it does not itself prove renewed cover.
- A claim form gathers facts and evidence about the loss.
In a scenario, ask what decision the document supports. Underwriting needs material risk information. Proof of cover needs a certificate or temporary evidence. Claim assessment needs evidence of the event, cause, ownership and amount.
Use a Fixed Claims Method
Apply claims questions in this order:
- Notify: was the event reported promptly and within the policy requirement?
- Establish cover: can the claimant bring the loss within the insuring clause?
- Prove cause and amount: what documents, damaged property, reports or other evidence support the claim?
- Mitigate: did the insured take reasonable steps to prevent further loss?
- Apply exclusions and conditions: does any wording remove or restrict liability?
- Measure settlement: apply indemnity, limits, average, excess and the selected settlement method.
- Preserve recovery rights: avoid admissions or actions that prejudice subrogation.
Settlement may be by cash payment, repair, replacement or reinstatement, depending on the policy and insurer’s option. Do not select a method before determining the admissible amount. For liability claims, do not assume that an accident automatically creates legal liability.
A Direct SCI BCP Study Plan
Stage 1 — Build role and document maps. Put insurers, reinsurers, agents, brokers, buyers and adjusters into one diagram. Make a second map linking each document to application, cover evidence, contract wording, renewal or claim proof.
Stage 2 — Drill close pairs. Practise peril versus hazard, pure versus speculative risk, indemnity versus benefit, subrogation versus contribution, void versus voidable contract, exclusion versus excess, and reinsurance versus co-insurance.
Stage 3 — Apply principles to short scenarios. For every scenario, identify the parties, subject matter, material fact, cause of loss, policy section and settlement rule. Do not jump directly to the final payment.
Stage 4 — Complete timed 40-question mocks. Allow 45 minutes and answer every item. Review wrong answers and correct guesses by error type: market role, regulatory instrument, risk classification, insurance principle, contract, document, claim, reinsurance or professional conduct.
The SCI BCP exam preparation course combines nine chapter summaries, 174 flashcards, a 168-item searchable reference sheet, five timed mocks and a course-grounded study assistant in one learning hub.
BCP Exam-Day Checklist
Identify the tested chapter before reading the options. Look for the exact actor, timing rule and legal consequence. Answer all 40 questions, flag only genuine close calls and use the final minutes to check causation, indemnity and document-function questions where one word can change the result.
