The CISI Investment Advice Diploma (IAD) is a UK-focused Level 4 qualification developed for the Retail Distribution Review examination standards. Its regulatory use depends on the technical unit completed and the FCA activity involved.
This guide explains the current three-unit structure, how the technical choice changes the qualification’s scope, and which facts to verify before booking.
The Structure of the IAD
The IAD is not a single exam. The current route contains two core units and one technical unit. CISI also publishes an exemption list, so a candidate with prior learning should check the decision before paying for all three examinations.
| Unit | Place in the qualification | What the choice establishes |
|---|---|---|
| UK Regulation and Professional Integrity | Core | UK regulatory framework and professional integrity |
| Investment, Risk and Taxation | Core | Investment, risk and UK taxation knowledge used across the pathways |
| Securities | Technical option | Advising on and dealing in securities, FCA Activities 2 and 12 |
| Derivatives | Technical option | Advising on and dealing in derivatives, FCA Activities 3 and 13 |
| Financial Planning and Advice | Technical option | Advising on retail investment products and friendly society tax-exempt policies, FCA Activities 4 and 6 |
The unit names and activity mapping above come from the current CISI IAD qualification page. Check the current unit page and Candidate Update for the assessment format, syllabus version and effective dates that apply to each booking.
How to Choose the Technical Unit
Do not choose from the job title alone. Ask the employer which FCA activity the role performs, then match that activity to Securities, Derivatives, or Financial Planning and Advice. “Investment adviser” is not precise enough because the underlying permission may differ.
If your work is more specifically focused on UK trusts or retirement-income planning, you may also encounter the specialist CII J02 Trusts and CII J05 Pension Income Options units.
Key Concepts and Flashcard Drills
Level 4 examinations do not test basic definitions. They test your ability to apply complex concepts in realistic scenarios. Use these flashcards to test your knowledge on essential IAD concepts:

Career Value of the IAD
The IAD’s clearest documented value is its place on the FCA Appropriate Qualifications tables for the activities covered by the selected route. It may also support progression to higher CISI qualifications and ACSI membership eligibility.
It does not by itself grant permission to advise, deal, manage investments or work in another jurisdiction. The employing firm must still assess competence and regulatory requirements, and candidates outside the UK should verify local recognition in writing.
Strategic Advice for Preparing for Level 4 Exams
- Plan from the published total: CISI gives 426 hours as the complete qualification time. Divide that estimate across the three selected units, then adjust after a diagnostic rather than applying the same hours to every paper.
- Use the correct tax year: For Investment, Risk and Taxation, label every tax table and threshold with its effective year and replace it when the Candidate Update changes.
- Separate similar rules: Build comparison sheets for client categories, permissions, disclosure duties and product tax treatment where the conditions are easily confused.
- Practise the selected activity: Use securities, derivatives or financial-planning scenarios that match the technical unit instead of relying on a general Level 4 question bank.
Use the current CISI workbook for each unit as the source for marked facts, and use practice questions to identify which learning objective needs to be revisited.

Financial Markets Overview
The financial services sector links organizations seeking capital with those with capital available to invest. The wholesale/professional sector includes Equity markets (trading shares on regulated exchanges with indices like S&P 500, FTSE 100), Bond markets (debt instruments for raising capital, influenced by interest rates and credit risk), Foreign Exchange (decentralized OTC trading of currencies for trade, speculation, and hedging), Derivatives (trading options, swaps, futures based on underlying assets like interest rates, mostly OTC but moving to exchanges), Insurance (management of personal/corporate risk, dominated by entities like Lloyd's and large reinsurers like Munich Re), Commercial Lending (business loans, term loans, unsecured loans, lines of…
