The CISI QFMA exam tests the regulatory framework candidates need for work connected with the Qatar Financial Markets Authority. Preparation becomes much clearer once you separate this unit from QFC, map the six official elements and use the published 50-question weighting to plan active revision.

Quick answer: QFMA Regulations is a 60-minute computer-based examination with 50 scored multiple-choice questions and a 70% pass mark. CISI recommends at least 80 study hours. A CBT sitting may contain up to 10% additional unscored trial questions, with proportionately more time.

Confirm that QFMA Regulations is your required unit

Qatar has two similar-sounding CISI regulatory examinations. Qatar Financial Markets Authority Regulations concerns the QFMA framework and Financial Services Rulebook. Qatar Financial Centre Rules and Regulations concerns the separate QFC and QFCRA setting. They are not alternate titles for one paper.

QFMA Regulations can also appear in more than one qualification context. CISI lists it as a regulatory unit that may be used in the Investment Operations Certificate or a CISI Certificate programme. Separately, the Qatar QFMA licensing programme combines a preparatory examination, the regulatory examination and an elective chosen for the market role. Passing this one unit should not be described as completing every part of those routes.

Know the official QFMA exam format

The live CISI unit selector publishes the following assessment facts:

The basic pace is 72 seconds for each scored question. Trial questions can increase the number displayed, but CISI provides proportionately more time. Do not try to identify which questions are trials; answer every item on its merits.

Map the six QFMA syllabus elements

The examination specification allocates approximately:

1. Licensed Activities — 8 questions: licensing conditions, approved persons, regulated functions, approval and the international regulatory environment.
2. Conduct of Business — 8 questions: codes of conduct, client relationships and principles for approved individuals.
3. Information Requirements — 7 questions: records and information flowing between companies and clients.
4. Internal Controls — 11 questions: compliance responsibility, resources, monitoring, risk management, personal dealing and compliance risk.
5. Managing the Risk of Financial Crime — 5 questions: AML/CFT governance, risk controls, due diligence and reporting.
6. Business Development — 11 questions: branches, agents, custodians, outsourcing, international expansion and licence changes.

CISI notes that an individual element can vary by up to two questions. Weighting is therefore a planning tool, not permission to skip an element. The two largest areas deserve the most time, but the other four still represent 28 scored questions.

Turn 80 hours into active study

Use 80 hours as a complete preparation budget. A practical starting allocation is 28 hours for first-pass source study, 18 for closed-book recall and flashcards, 20 for topic and mixed questions, 8 for timed sets, and 6 for delayed error review.

Adjust by evidence. If your error log shows repeated confusion about compliance responsibilities or outsourcing, give those subtopics more retrieval cycles. Do not move time merely because a chapter feels difficult; move it because a testable distinction is not yet retrievable.

For each rule, record the regulated person, activity, responsibility, timing, exception and consequence. This structure is more useful than copying long paragraphs because scenario questions often change only one of those variables.

Practise the 60-minute decision rhythm

Begin with untimed topic questions, then move to mixed sets where the chapter is not announced. In the final phase, use a full 60-minute rhythm and a simple rule: answer clear items, mark genuinely uncertain items, and return after protecting time for the remaining questions.

Review distractors as well as correct answers. Ask what fact would make each rejected option true. That builds the discrimination needed when several statements use familiar regulatory language.

Your error log should be short: the mistaken classification, the correct principle and the clue you missed. Retest the same distinction after a delay. Immediate recognition can feel like mastery even when the rule is not yet available from memory.
