A CISI mock exam is useful only if its result changes what you study next. A high score on familiar questions can hide weak understanding; a lower score on a fresh paper can expose exactly what needs fixing. Use this sequence: attempt without help, diagnose errors, repair the causes, then retest on different questions.

This guide covers multiple-choice preparation. If your unit uses written answers, use the relevant past papers, examiner reports and marking approach instead of applying an MCQ score target.

What Makes a Good Mock Exam

Before spending time on a paper, match it to your exact booked unit, current syllabus, question count and duration. Check that explanations identify the rule or calculation behind an answer. A bank labelled only “CISI questions” may cover a different qualification or jurisdiction.

CISI’s study-support guidance distinguishes exam-standard sample papers from other learning questions. It also tells candidates to check the workbook edition applicable to their sitting. Use official samples to understand style and format; do not expect their questions to appear in your exam.

Calculate your pace rather than borrowing another candidate’s timer. In a hypothetical 100-question, 120-minute assessment, reserving 12 minutes for review leaves 108 minutes: 64.8 seconds per question on the first pass. The overall average is 72 seconds, but spending that on every question leaves no review allowance. Adapt this calculation to your unit and practise the time-management method.

How to Use Mock Exams Strategically

Use three stages, not a fixed calendar that assumes every candidate has the same syllabus and starting point.

1. During learning: answer short topic sets after studying an outcome. Explain the rule without notes before checking the answer. If you cannot attempt most questions, return to that outcome rather than using the score as a verdict on your ability.
2. For diagnosis: sit a full paper once you have enough coverage to make its results interpretable. Use the actual time limit, permitted equipment and a quiet uninterrupted setting. Record uncertain answers as well as wrong ones.
3. For confirmation: after targeted repairs, sit a different timed paper. Look for fewer recurring errors and better pacing, not just a higher familiar-bank score.

Research on test-enhanced learning supports retrieval practice for later retention. It does not establish a guaranteed CISI pass rate or prove that a particular number of mocks is sufficient.

Analysing Your Mock Exam Results

Suppose this is your result on an illustrative 100-question practice paper. These topic weights are an example, not a CISI examination blueprint.

The priority is not another complete reread. Regulation accounts for 20 of 27 lost marks in this attempt. Inspect those errors first: did you forget the rule, confuse its jurisdiction, miss an exception or fail to apply it? Different causes need different repairs.

Keep an error log short enough to use:

If eight correct answers were guesses, keep the raw score but flag those eight for review. Convert a repeated rule-confusion into a flashcard; use a worked example for a calculation error. Copying an entire explanation rarely makes the next decision clearer.

Common Mock Exam Mistakes

• Repeating a paper to raise the score: useful for learning, weak as independent readiness evidence. Reserve fresh questions for the next check.
• Starting another mock immediately: an additional score does not repair the first paper’s errors. Finish the error-log actions first.
• Checking answers during a timed attempt: separate learning mode from simulation mode so the result means something.
• Studying only the weakest topic: maintain short mixed sets so stronger topics are not abandoned.
• Treating 75% as a universal safety margin: pass standards and provider difficulty differ. Verify the official requirement and consider unfamiliar-question performance, coverage and time control together.

Your Mock Exam Checklist

Before the sitting, confirm that you can finish an unfamiliar paper within the correct limit, attempt every syllabus area, explain your correct answers and show that repeated error types are decreasing. Have a plan for long questions and a stated review allowance.

If any check fails, name the missing outcome or skill and schedule a specific repair. If your timetable cannot accommodate that work, check the official rescheduling conditions before changing the booking. No checklist or provider score can guarantee a pass; the useful outcome is evidence of readiness and a clear next action.
