Quick answer: There is no single CISI exam format. Question counts, duration, pass standards and assessment type depend on the qualification, so check the current qualification page, syllabus specification and your booking instructions before planning practice.
Assuming every CISI exam contains 100 questions in two hours can produce the wrong pacing strategy; some current assessments use 50 questions in one hour or a different structure.
The Three Documents to Check
Before building a study plan, verify your exam using:
- The official qualification page — confirms the qualification structure, delivery options and study support.
- The current syllabus and examination specification — identifies learning objectives, weightings, number of questions and duration.
- Your booking and candidate instructions — confirms the operational rules that apply to your appointment.
The CISI qualifications directory is the correct starting point. Save the syllabus version you used so you can identify later updates.
Examples of Different CISI Structures
| Qualification or unit | Published format example | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| International Certificate in Wealth & Investment Management | 100 multiple-choice questions in 2 hours; official sample paper shows 70 as a pass | Average pace is 72 seconds per question |
| Corporate Finance Technical Foundations | 50 multiple-choice questions in 1 hour | Same average pace, but a smaller and more quantitative specification |
| Higher-level or narrative assessments | Can use structures other than standard on-demand multiple choice | Requires assessment-specific preparation rather than generic mock strategy |
These examples are not a permanent master table. CISI can update assessments, and language or regional variants can differ. Confirm the specification attached to the exam you will actually sit.
Multiple-Choice Does Not Mean Definition-Only
CISI multiple-choice questions can test several levels of understanding:
- Recall: identifying a definition, rule, characteristic or formula.
- Comparison: distinguishing similar instruments, roles or regulatory concepts.
- Calculation: producing and interpreting a numerical result.
- Application: selecting the most appropriate response to a client, market or operational scenario.
- Sequencing: identifying what happens first, next or under a particular condition.
A candidate who only recognises workbook wording may struggle when the same objective appears in an unfamiliar scenario.
How Syllabus Weightings Should Shape Your Plan
Where the official examination specification provides question numbers by element, use them to allocate practice—but do not ignore smaller elements.
For example, the current Corporate Finance Technical Foundations specification allocates:
- 10 questions to Financial Statements Analysis;
- 10 to Corporate Transactions;
- 9 to Introduction to Business Valuations;
- 8 to Capital Structure;
- 7 to Quantitative Methods; and
- 6 to Corporate Finance Documentation.
That tells you what is likely to have the greatest effect on the score. It does not make the six-question element optional.
Use this planning formula:
Study priority = exam weighting × current weakness × consequence of misunderstanding
A high-weight weak area deserves immediate attention. A low-weight area that you already understand needs maintenance, not the same number of hours.
Timing Strategy
Calculate the average pace from the published duration and displayed question count, then use checkpoints rather than obsessing over every individual question.
For a 100-question, 120-minute exam:
- question 25: approximately 30 minutes;
- question 50: approximately 60 minutes;
- question 75: approximately 90 minutes;
- question 100: approximately 120 minutes.
For a 50-question, 60-minute exam, the same average applies:
- question 10: approximately 12 minutes;
- question 25: approximately 30 minutes;
- question 40: approximately 48 minutes.
Your actual approach should preserve review time where possible. If a question is consuming disproportionate time, record your best reasoned answer, flag it if the platform permits, and continue.
Trial Questions
Some CISI computer-based examination specifications warn that a paper may include up to 10% additional trial questions. They are not separately identified and do not contribute to the result; candidates receive proportionately more time.
The practical rule is simple: treat every question as scored. Do not attempt to identify trial items based on difficulty or unfamiliar wording.
Test-Centre and Remote Delivery
CISI offers eligible multiple-choice exams through remote invigilation and global test centres. The CISI remote-invigilation information explains that remote candidates are monitored by a live invigilator using audio and video.
Availability and operational requirements can change. UAE candidates should confirm:
- whether the exact exam and language are remotely available;
- accepted identification;
- computer, camera, microphone and network requirements;
- room and desk restrictions;
- check-in time and time-zone conversion;
- permitted materials;
- rescheduling rules; and
- what to do if a technical problem occurs.
Run any required system test on the same device, network and location you plan to use. A successful test on another laptop does not validate the exam device.
Materials and Calculator Rules
Do not rely on rules from another qualification.
The current CISI Corporate Finance Technical Foundations workbook states that handheld calculators are not allowed in CISI exam venues and CBT candidates must use the onscreen calculator. Other assessments may have their own permitted-material rules.
Check:
- calculator availability and functions;
- whether note boards or paper are provided or permitted;
- whether the exam is closed book;
- identification and personal-item rules; and
- accessibility or reasonable-adjustment arrangements.
Practise calculations using an onscreen calculator if that is what your exam supplies.
Pass Marks and Results
Pass marks are exam-specific. The official ICWIM sample paper currently shows:
- 91–100: pass with merit;
- 70–90: pass;
- 0–69: fail.
That must not be turned into the claim that every CISI exam uses 70%. Check the current page, syllabus or sample paper for your qualification.
Also distinguish:
- a raw practice percentage;
- the official exam pass mark;
- a pass rate across candidates; and
- your probability of passing.
They are not the same metric. A familiar mock score can overstate readiness if you remember the questions.
A Better Mock-Exam Progression
Phase 1: Untimed Topic Questions
Learn how each objective is tested. Explain why every incorrect option is wrong.
Phase 2: Timed Topic Sets
Add pressure while still isolating one syllabus element. Track knowledge, calculation, reading and timing errors separately.
Phase 3: Mixed Sets
Practise switching between topics without headings telling you which method to use.
Phase 4: Full Simulation
Match the published question count, time limit, permitted tools and break conditions as closely as practical.
Phase 5: Repair and Re-test
Return to the official learning objective behind each error, then answer new questions. Repeating the same paper immediately is a memory test, not a reliable readiness test.
Booking Checklist for UAE Candidates
Before the appointment, confirm:
- exact exam title, code, language and syllabus version;
- date, time and time zone;
- test-centre address or remote system status;
- identification requirements;
- permitted and prohibited materials;
- calculator arrangements;
- exam duration and any additional trial-question time;
- rescheduling and incident procedures; and
- contact details for candidate support.

Final Rule
Build your preparation around the current specification for your exact exam. “Most CISI exams” is not precise enough when your score depends on the format, learning objectives and rules of one particular assessment.
Frequently Asked Questions
1 Do all CISI exams have 100 questions and a two-hour time limit?
No. Format, question count and duration depend on the qualification. ICWIM currently uses 100 questions in two hours, while Corporate Finance Technical Foundations uses 50 questions in one hour. Always check the current syllabus and booking details for your exact exam.
2 Are all CISI pass marks 70%?
No universal pass mark should be assumed. CISI publishes exam-specific pass marks and grading information. Verify the current qualification page, syllabus or sample paper.
3 Can UAE candidates take CISI exams remotely?
CISI offers remote invigilation for eligible multiple-choice exams as well as global test-centre delivery. Availability can depend on the exam, language, location and booking options.
4 Can I use my own calculator?
Rules depend on the assessment. Current CISI Corporate Finance Technical Foundations material states that handheld calculators are not allowed in CISI venues and candidates use the onscreen calculator for CBT exams. Check your own candidate instructions.
5 Can an exam include trial questions?
Some current CISI examination specifications state that computer-based tests may include up to 10% additional unidentified trial questions that do not count toward the result, with proportionately more time. Check whether this applies to your qualification.
