To study for a CISI exam while working full-time in Dubai, start with hours you can reliably protect, not the exam date you hope to achieve. Match those hours to your exact unit’s learning outcomes, then reserve time for revision, timed practice and interruptions.

The plan below uses an 8.5-hour working week. It is a template you can adapt to office work, shifts or a different weekend—not a claim that every CISI qualification needs the same preparation.

Creating a Realistic Study Schedule

Write three lists before scheduling sessions: outcomes not yet studied, outcomes studied but not reliably recalled, and assessment practice still needed. Use the official syllabus and your initial question results to create them. CISI’s study-support page explains where to find current materials and sample papers.

Estimate time for tasks rather than pages. “Read chapter three” can hide unfamiliar calculations; “explain the three concepts, solve fresh questions and review the errors” gives you a testable output. Re-estimate after your first week.

Ten weeks at 8.5 hours gives 85 hours. Reserving 15 hours for interruptions leaves 70 planned hours. If your remaining task list needs 82 hours, the plan has a 12-hour shortfall. Hoping to study faster does not close it.

The options are to add genuinely available sessions, remove duplicated low-value work, or consider a later sitting. Recalculate using your own estimates; these numbers demonstrate the method, not an official study requirement.

Maximising Small Time Blocks

Give each available block one job. Do not open five tools and spend half the session deciding what to do.

• 15 minutes: recall yesterday’s rule for three minutes, attempt a short question set for seven, then spend five checking the reasoning.
• 30 minutes: retest one recurring error family and update the flashcards that caused confusion.
• 90 minutes: spend 35 on a new concept, 20 recalling or working it through, 25 on questions and 10 recording the next action.

Adjust those allocations when a calculation needs longer. Their purpose is to stop passive reading occupying the entire session.

A commute is useful for supplementary review when you are a passenger. Do not use a phone, flashcards or reading material while driving. A noisy journey is also a poor substitute for the sustained attention required by a timed paper.

Managing Energy, Not Just Time

Put unfamiliar calculations, long scenarios or difficult rules in the time slot when you can concentrate best. Use lower-energy periods for a bounded task such as checking five prior mistakes. If evening study repeatedly produces no usable output, move the hardest task to a morning or your day off.

Fit the Plan Around Your Actual Working Pattern

Confirm your busiest reporting, travel or shift weeks before booking the exam. Put those constraints on the same calendar as your study tasks. A month-end deadline is not an unexpected interruption if you already know it is coming.

Ask your manager or learning-and-development team whether study leave or exam support is available. Do not build essential hours around unapproved leave. If your hours change during Ramadan or another period, plan from the hours you personally have rather than assuming everyone gains study time.

Protect one uninterrupted session for an exam-format rehearsal. Short lunch-break sets can develop knowledge, but they do not establish whether you can finish the actual paper within its time limit.

Handling Setbacks

Use a weekly five-minute review: what was completed, what remains, and which error now deserves the next longer session?

If you miss Monday’s 90-minute block, move that task into the Sunday buffer. Do not automatically double Tuesday’s workload. If a second block is also missed, remove a lower-priority repeat session or revise the overall schedule.

Keep a small fallback routine for unusually busy days: retrieve one rule, check one earlier mistake and write the next task. This maintains continuity, but do not count a 15-minute fallback as replacement for a missed 90-minute session.

When the remaining workload no longer fits, check your booking’s current rescheduling terms before making a change. Continuing an impossible timetable usually preserves the date while sacrificing the work you intended to complete.

The Final Week

Use your mock results to choose the final repairs. Review wrong answers and correct guesses, then attempt different questions to see whether the correction transfers. Avoid filling the week with repeated familiar papers just to raise a score.

Confirm the assessment format, permitted equipment, identification requirements and test-centre journey or remote setup through your official booking information. Leave enough time to resolve a practical problem.
