Question (a)

ScenarioAmira, 34, and Ben, 36, have children aged three and six. Their combined take-home pay is £5,200 a month and essential household expenditure is £4,100 a month, including mortgage payments. Cash is £9,000. A £245,000 repayment mortgage has twenty-two years remaining. Amira receives three months' full sick pay; Ben has no employer sick pay. Amira's death-in-service cover ends if she leaves her job. Their only personal life policy pays £18,000 a year for ten more years. For this calculation assume it pays on the death of either parent and that the family needs a further £32,000 net a year for nineteen years after allowing for surviving earnings and other resources, but before replacement childcare costs. They would like to save for university but have not agreed an amount or date. Ben has become anxious after a friend's serious illness and finds long forms difficult. Neither has reviewed their wills since the children were born.

Identify six additional items needed to complete the family fact-find, giving a case-specific reason for each. Cover one distinct response in each area: income/employment; existing personal protection; dependency and care; mortgage; education objectives; communication/support. Identify a specific point within each area; repeating a topic label alone earns no credit.

Chapter 1: Establish client objectives, needs and priorities

Begin with the relationship

Financial planning connects a client's resources with their aims and the risks that could prevent those aims being met. Establish what work is being commissioned before collecting information or selecting investments. Explain the firm's regulatory and advice status, the scope and limits of the service, initial and ongoing costs, conflicts, confidentiality and the review service. The client needs to understand what the adviser will do and what the agreement excludes. A signed form is evidence of an agreement; it does not establish that the client understood it.

ISO 22222 describes six linked stages: establish and define the relationship; gather data and determine goals and expectations; analyse and evaluate financial status; develop and present the plan; imp…

Practise applying the financial planning process

R06 combines regulation, investment, tax, pensions and protection knowledge in client-specific written answers. Preparation needs more than recognising a rule: identify missing facts, quantify weaknesses, compare options and explain why an action suits the client.

Study the seven chapters in their official order, then use 132 flashcards and 166 reference entries to retrieve methods and close distinctions. Twenty worked applications show formulas, supplied inputs, ordered steps, answers and limitations, including education funding, gearing, tax, estate bands and retirement cash flow.

Write, explain and review

Five original guided papers each contain two client cases, 150 marks and a three-hour exam-conditions option. Topic areas define the response scope while you supply the facts, analysis, recommendations and reasons. The authored 75/75 case allocation is a practice design, not a fixed official split. Type answers, flag parts and review your work; source-backed criterion feedback gives practice estimates rather than official CII grades.

The separate five answer-planning sets provide 140 selected-response questions with explanations. These shorter drills develop decisions and response structure. Their 45-minute clock and 70% mastery target differ from the official written examination and do not reproduce or grade it.

The official R06 assessment comprises two case studies with short-answer questions, 180 minutes and 150 marks, with a standard pass reference of 55%. CII releases its cases two weeks before the sitting. Use the official preparation materials alongside this independent course.
